I love a good, old-fashioned mystery. I call it “reading somebody to death”. There are “thrillers” like Tom Clancy writes, then there are more simple mysteries where the characters and the relationships between them are as enjoyable as solving the who-done-it. These are often written in a series so you get to know and love the people in the books. If I say “Kinsey Millhone” many readers not only know to whom I refer, but know her.
Rosemary Harris has a series like that – the Dirty Business Mysteries. Paula Holliday escapes NYC to start a one woman landscaping biz in tiny Springfield, Connecticut. She just wants to dig in the dirt and eat greasy diner food, but, for a small town, Springfield plots a lot of murders. For some reason, Paula seems to be good at digging up old dirt on people and piecing together those clues.
In Dead Head, one of the “Main Street Moms” in Springfield – well-to-do, pretty, thin, all that – turns out to be a fugitive, convicted drug dealer who has been living a lie for twenty years. Her husband and two kids have no idea what her real name is or that she escaped from a work detail, then created a new life. It’s a fun book filled with plenty of twists.
